Ackhurst Cottage Orrell

Started by: daviessb (90)

Just found some ancestors on the 1921 Census.
Living in Ackhurst Cottage Orrell. I’ve found an Ackhurst Hall Cottage, is it the same dwelling? I’ve looked on old maps but can’t see anything.

Ackhurst Hall is on Gathurst Road just past St John Rigby College as you travel from Orrell Post to Shevington. Maybe it's around there somewhere.
There seem to be a group of buildings on that site so perhaps it is one of those.

Thank you Winnie and Ena. I'm presuming over the years, Hall was added to the cottage name.

Hi. Are you related to the Gore family who lived at Ackhurst Hall and/or Ackhurst Hall cottage? The first member of my family to live there was my great-grandfather's brother, Robert Gore. Happy to share information if you're interested. Good luck in your research.

PS: There's a lot about Ackhurst Hall on the British Newspaper Archive (some tragedies in its history (1860s) which were covered extensively by the British press of the time).

The family were called Callister. Phillip the father was a hairdresser in Wigan. I didn't know they lived there, just seeing the 1921 census has sent me down a different path. Knew my husbands Gran was born in Orrell, but didn't know where.
